I was first attracted to the serene qualities of early 1900's landscape photographer, Wallace Nutting. His peaceful hand-tinted landscape series was my inspiration. As I became more familiar with his hand-tinting techniques, I began using them with my portraiture and also with my arranged compositions. I photograph in black and white and color each photograph by hand, using oil paints, watercolors, pastels and dyes. By applying color to the black and white image, I am able to introduce subtle and surreal elements that allow me to refine that image further.

I have most recently been experimenting with staged poses including the use of animal masks and mannequins and have begun to explore still life compositions that incorporate ever more surreal elements. It is through the medium of hand-tinting photographs that I have found a way to express my vision of the world, somewhere between reality and dreams. ROBERT GULLIE ROBERT GULLIE
